How to Use Video to Stand Out on LinkedIn Right Now

Notice anything different about your LinkedIn feed lately? A few months ago LinkedIn introduced a native video feature for all users and I have noticed more and more videos popping up from different businesses, advertisers and experts in different fields. If you’re looking for a job, posting a “Video Resume” could be an exciting new way to stand out. Surprisingly enough, I haven’t seen many job seeker videos pop up…so get going while the competition is low.

How do I go about it?

  • LinkedIn recommends your video to be between 30 seconds and 5 minutes in length. Ideally a 1 minute video should be enough.
  • Grab your phone and open the LinkedIn app. The camera icon just needs tapped to record directly OR another option is you can upload a previously recorded video directly to your profile.
  • Videos will automatically play when your LinkedIn profile is opened and will be counted as “played” after 3 seconds.

Why should I post a video resume?

  • As opposed to a text resume, this is a great way to show off your personality and creativity.
  • Hiring managers and recruiters are 7 times more likely to view the video over an attached text only resume on LinkedIn.
  • The LinkedIn native video change will allow direct access without YouTube commercials and redirects. Very professional change to your video.

Important to know:

  • Don’t just recite your resume. Take this opportunity to tell a story or share an experience and let your personality shine through.
  • Know what you want to say before you start the recording. Prepare a script or just plan the points you want to cover. This make take a few “takes” to get right.
  • Use visuals to illustrate your talents and skills. Just as you would show your portfolio in an interview, use this opportunity to show your significant projects or any outstanding skills.
  • Your video resume is not meant to replace your CV or your portfolio. It’s a great supplement to grab attention and get employers to look further into your application.

In a visual profession such as Architecture & Interior Design, showcasing your skills visually should be a natural fit. If you are looking for a great way to highlight your skills, this is it!
